Jawaja Leather
For well over 300 years, leatherwork has been the primary occupation of the Regar community of artisans in Rajasthan, India.‘Jawaja Leather Association’ (JLA), a constituent of the ‘Artisan’s Alliance Jawaja’ (AAJ), established around 1975, is a group of local artisans from the remote villages surrounding the Beawar city which includes Jawaja, Beawar Khas, Sargaon in Rajasthan. In 1976, as an initiative of IIM, Ahmedabad, and the National Institute for Design, a leatherwork co-operative was formed. Jawaja Leather is a flourishing craft now. It is known and can be identified across the world because of its unique identity and functional style.
